We know that language development begins even before birth as babies hear from the womb. We also know that as soon as they arrive they listen to every voice they love. This is why supporting literacy from birth is vital and Big Sky Stories is working to that end.
Since January 2025 we have been curating and creating Newborn Literacy Support Packs to help families and carers bring story into their day from the very beginning.
Each packs contains at least four quality books; a black and white book for early sight support and engagement, another board book and two picture books full of rhyme, repetition, beautiful vocabulary and images to delight. There is a finger puppet for your little storyteller, information to support your reading together journey, a discount voucher at One More Page Book Emporium and other helpful information.
These packs are gifted from Big Sky Stories and passed on by the Far West Child and Family Health Team when they visit families at home. Each baby born in Broken Hill (or supported by the local team) receives this pack, since January 2025 over 200 packs have been shared.
We are grateful for the support of the Far West Local Health District and the team who pass on these packs with care and encouragement. They know stories help build attachment and that literacy skills positively impact health throughout our lives so starting from day 1 and supporting families, just makes sense.
