After-school Macrame and Weaving

Wednesday afternoons at Big Sky Stories has been a hive of creative activity. Over four weeks, 14 children aged 8-13 years gathered to both create their own fibrecraft delights to take home and to work on a community weaving to adorn the walls of Big Sky Stories.

Using macrame and weaving techniques they made key rings, bookmarks, wall hangings and Christmas decorations. Making isn’t a linear process: the need to do, undo and redo is expected to be part of the experience. I was therefore grateful for the volunteer help of some other adults to guide encourage and problem solve with the children along the way.

The children’s feedback comments indicated that they had fun, learnt new skills and that they’d like to come back for some more making in the future. There were also some comments about getting hungry, so next time there will definitely be some snacks on hand to keep the creative energy high.

The enthusiasm from everyone has inspired me to continue this after-school program in 2023, as well as develop some more school holiday sessions. My mind is all a buzz with ideas, so keep an eye on our social media pages for details of upcoming creative opportunities at Big Sky Stories.
