One More Page Book Emporium: More than your regular bookshop

A treasure to mine in Broken Hill

If you are an avid reader, who often finds it difficult to put a book down, you will identify with One More Page Book Emporium, a specialist children’s bookshop and creative treasure trove in the centre of Broken Hill. The Emporium is much more than a bookshop and has been lovingly designed and resourced for children, young people and their families as a safe even magical space to share stories and creative experiences.

One More Page Book Emporium and Big Sky Stories

As one of the retail arms supporting the social enterprise Big Sky Stories, the profits from the sales at  One More Page Book Emporium  go towards enabling all children, young people and families to be inspired and empowered through the world of books, puzzles, fibrecraft, storytelling and other creative arts.

The importance of stories and books in our lives and learning

Human beings are story telling creatures – we live our lives, make sense of who we are, learn to understand others and our place in the world through storying. At the same time we develop our language and literacy skills. Further, research tells us that children and adolescents who live in a book-rich home, own books of their own and have opportunities to choose what they enjoy reading in bookshops, libraries and at preschool and school, are more likely to do well academically and in life more broadly.

As co-founder and co-director Jane Vaughan says:

We want every child to experience the magic that happens in the space between you,

someone you love and a great story. We want every child to grow up be able to

read for themselves so they can learn, explore, understand,

and access the world around them. Part of making this happen is through

access to quality books!

The bookshop space

The bookshop space itself draws you in – it has been carefully designed to ensure that children can easily access the books and creative puzzles, puppets, games and fibrecraft activities. There is a wonderful place for creative play, shared reading, imaginative storytelling and macrame workshops. Big green chairs and cushions at the back of the bookshop welcome children and adults alike to losing themselves in stories.

A shared space to read books and imagine

What’s available?

Quality books are given a priority at this bookshop. As Jane and co-founder and director Nicky emphasise, many children’s books are often layered with meanings that are just as relevant for grown-ups.

The bookshop caters for

·       newborns and little ones

·       early and emergent readers

·       middle primary readers

·       young adults

A large selection of non-fiction books are always in stock.

In addition, there are a variety of titles about feelings and neurodiversity. LGBTQIA+ readers are also well catered for. A limited selection of books for grown-ups are also available.

Schools, preschools, parents and caregivers and community groups are encouraged to seek advice on the books they need.  Any book you need can be ordered in person at 360 Argent St, Broken Hill, through the One More Page Book Emporium website or via email or phone.

Buying books

Purchasing books at One More Page Book Emporium wherever you are in the world directly benefits the children, young people and families of far west NSW. At any time you can also buy a book for a child that may otherwise not have access to such a valuable resource through our Pay it Forward initiative.

After all, giving the gift of reading to those around you can be the very best gift there is!
